TA: UEFA launches disciplinary punishment process against Simeone, Liverpool is charged for throwing miscellaneous items
According to The Athletic, Atletico coach Simeone was sent off after a dispute with Liverpool fans in the Champions League last week, and UEFA has launched a disciplinary process against him. Liverpool has also been charged by UEFA for fans throwing items during the game. Simone was angry at home fans sitting near the bench after Van Dijk scored the winning goal in Liverpool's 3-2 Atletico Madrid. The broadcast footage showed that Simeone walked to the same stand twice, and several security guards and Atletico Madrid coaching staff had to hold him back. Simeone made a gesture to the stands as he walked towards the fourth official, and was then sent off by referee Mariana. Video footage on social media also showed Atletico Madrid staff also confronting Liverpool fans, one of whom threw a bottle in the direction of the crowd. After the game, Atletico Madrid reviewed the incident, including scenes of staff spitting at the audience. Simone had been banned from the European competition. He was sent off in the first leg of the 2018 Europa League semi-finals against Arsenal, and then witnessed the team's 1-0 victory in the second leg, 3-0 victory over Marseille in the final and 4-2 defeat of Real Madrid in the European Super League. Atletico Madrid will face Frankfurt at home in the second round of the Champions League group stage, and then challenge Arsenal away.
